ROCK COLLECTION FROM SWITZERLAND
The rock collection from Switzerland offers an example of the country's geological underground and the border region close to Basel.
The collection comprises 315 very well documented, significant rock samples of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary origin. It is divided up in line with the internationally recognised nomenclature system for rocks.
Most of the exhibits come from the Central Alps and from the Graubünden (Grisons), Uri, Tessin (Ticino) and Wallis (Valais) cantons. They are uniquely assigned to the currently established geological – tectonic units (Helvetic Zone, Penninic Zone, Austroalpine and Southalpine).
267 samples are from the geological foundations of Switzerland, while 23 come from neighbouring countries, representing the Black Forest, the Kaiserstuhl mountains and the Vosges region.
